THE DARK TRUTH BEHIND PET AIR TRAVEL
Flying with your animal companion ends in tragedy a lot more often than most people think. The Airlines and Airports, within the policy framework of the authorities and with the cooperation of the animal transport companies are selling us a false reality from which everyone profits.
The number of accidents that result in death, injuries or lost animals are a lot more than what they would have you believe, and this is only in relation to the limited data that we are aware of. In the last 18 years there have been 365 deaths, 213 injuries and 54 animals lost on flights within the US alone, which is one of the few countries that are required to keep and provide records to the transport authorities.
Almost all deaths are caused by pneumonia, suffocation, heat stroke, heart failure and symptoms related to anxiety.
In the cargo hold they are cut off and alone, in the dark and surrounded by suitcases and with other animal species. They endure very loud sounds and strong, unpleasant smells. Nobody is there to see and prevent an accident or to intervene and help in case of an emergency. At the airport they are treated like objects; handled roughly, without control, their carriers are stacked together, they get dropped and carriers break, they get left waiting for long periods of time, they are forgotten on the tarmac to endure extreme temperatures…All this is nothing but animal cruelty.
On the other hand, none of the airlines take responsibility if there’s an accident, there aren’t any protocols in place to deal with one, the airport authorities don’t offer any assistance and in most cases the staff that manage the animals don’t belong to the airlines but are sub-contracted and don’t have the necessary skills or empathy to handle animals.
The Human Society and Animal Defense Fund and all the official animal welfare organizations openly discourage flying with your pet and more so in the cargo hold. Likewise, almost all veterinarians and professional dog and cat behaviorists and handlers, as well as ethologists, also discourage flying with your pet either in the cabin or cargo hold. Not only because of possible physical harm or risk of death, but because of the phycological trauma that many of them suffer that often goes unseen. Each animal is different, just as we humans are.
Lastly, we live in a world in which many countries have constitutions which consider animals to be “sentient beings” and in some they will soon be considered as “subjects of law”. As a result, the way in which pets are transported on airplanes is in direct contravention to existing laws.
…However, seeing as there are no alternatives we are left with no choice but to put our pet’s lives at risk.
…Until somebody changes the status quo.
LA CRUDA REALIDAD DEL TRANSPORTE AEREO DE ANIMALES DE COMPAÑÍA
Hoy en día volar con tu animal de compañía acaba en tragedia mucho más a menudo de lo que nos imaginamos. Las Aerolíneas y los Aeropuertos junto a las politicas regulatorias gubernamentales y la complicidad de las empresas de transporte de mascotas y animales, nos venden una falsa realidad afín de seguir aumentando sus ingresos.
Los accidentes con resultado de muerte, heridos o perdidos son muchisimo mas elevados de lo que nos hacen creer. Y esos son solo los datos conocidos. En los últimos 18 años han habido más de 365 muertos, 213 heridos y 54 animales perdidos solo en los vuelos comerciales de USA que es uno de los pocos paises que tiene que comunicar al departamento de transporte los datos de accidentes.
La casi totalidad de las defunciones son causadas por neumonías, asfixias, golpes de calor, fallos cardiacos y síntomas relacionados con la ansiedad.
En la bodega vuelan incomunicados, a oscuras, junto a las maletas y a otras especies de animales. Con ruidos extremadamente fuertes y olores extraños y desagradables. Sin que nadie puede ni ver ni actuar en caso de emergencia. En los Aeropuertos son manejados como si fueran objetos; con brusquedad, sin control, los transportines son apelotonados, se caen, se rompen, se dejan esperando durante tiempo, son olvidados en asfalto bajo tempersturas extremas....Eso es maltrato animal.
Por otro lado, ninguna aerolínea asume la responsabilidad en caso de accidente,no existen protocolos de actuación en caso de accidente, las autoridades aeroportuarias no ofrecen ninguna colaboración y en la mayoría de los casos los trabajadores que gestionan a los animales no pertenecen a las aerolíneas sino a empresas subcontratadas y carecen de experiencia y empatia en manejo de amimales.
La Human Society y Animal Legal Defense Found y todos los organismos oficiales de defensa del bienestar animal desaconsejan abiertamente viajar a los animales en avión (especialmente en Cargo). También la casi totalidad de los veterinarios asi como profesionales caninos o felinos y etologos, desaconsejan que vuelen tanto en cargo como en cabina tal y como se hace hoy en día. No sólo por el daño físico y el riesgo de muerte sino por el daño y trauma psicológico al que muchos de ellos serán víctimas aunque no sea tan visible, debido a que cada animal es un individuo diferente. Como lo somos nosotros.
Por último, vivimos en una sociedad en la que muchas constituciones consideran a los animales "seres sintientes" y algunas de ellas están en proceso de considerarlos "sujetos de derecho", asi que el transporte de animales de compañía actual en avión esta contradiciendo la ley.
...Pero como no hay opción nos vemos forzados a poner en riesgo la vida de nuestros animales.
...Hasta que alguien cambie las reglas.
